An innovation to build into ATMs? Ronaldo might think so…
Today was one of those perfect days. The kind you remember from your childhood as what the summer holidays were all about. A blue cloudless sky crowned a warm sunny afternoon spent lying in the park with a good book. Having spent the morning getting a bit of work done and pottering around I walked into town to pick up some bits and bobs in preparation for the week ahead.
I love days like this, no need to race, plenty of time to take in your surrounds and lots of smiling people enjoying a rare bit of unpunctuated sunshine. Needing cash, I queued at the ATM, and not being in any hurry I nodded to the man in the Ronaldo football shirt to go ahead of me.
His was a fiddly transaction involving balance enquiries and receipts and random pieces of paper. Finally he made his way from the machine and I took up my position. The ATM was still thinking about its previous customer so I waited patiently, and as I did so it spat out a crisp ten-pound note at me.
Being the good samaritan that I am I looked up to see Ronaldo disappearing down the street – obviously not the real thing as he didn’t respond when I called out to him – I legged it down the street and handed him his tenner, which he took with a surprised expression on his face that suggested he had completely forgotten why he’d been at the ATM in the first place – wish I could afford to not be bothered about the odd tenner here and there!
And that’s when it hit me – the innovation that all ATMs need. A magic eye camera built in that tells them when an idiot has walked off without waiting for their cash, and a loudspeaker that hails them to remind them of the fact. Something along the lines of “Oi! Don’t forget your money!” might do the trick. I think I’ll take it to the next series of Dragon’s Den, can’t be hard to mock up a prototype – no worse than some of the rubbish I’ve seen on there over the years anyway. Want to join my project team? This time next year we’ll all be millionaires!
