A Mother’s Day gift guide

I may not be a fan of Valentine’s Day and other Hallmark moments but I have to admit to a soft spot for Mother’s Day. As a mother of three I accept that there’s an awful lot of one-way traffic. I get to deal with day after day of mud-coated school uniform and a mountain of rice crispies left underneath the table every day.

And that’s all fine. But once a year I get to revel in the fact that there is one day dedicated to telling me that they think I’m wonderful – even if they’ve just been told off for turning their bedroom into a post-apocalyptic installation that Tracy Emin would be proud of.

My personal Mother’s Day gift faves are of the home-made variety, which is handy really as the combined income of a 10, 7 and 5 year old is approximately 72p. I love the fact that I get eleventy billion hand-drawn cards, a cup of tea from the 10yo and maybe a Freddo bar. We’re going to go out for tea and cake on Sunday and I’m going to tell them in advance that the best present they can give me is not to attempt to gouge out each other’s eyes in the tea shop.

If you’re struggling for gift ideas for Mother’s Day maybe I can help. I took a quick straw poll to find the gifts people really DIDN’T want to receive – this is what they said:

1. Candles
2. Cheap flowers
3. Socks
4. A ‘love songs’ CD compilation
5. Anything from the supermarket gift aisle
6. Expensive presents
7. Taxidermied animals
8. Parenting guide books – especially those by Gina Ford

So what’s on the safe list?

1. Breakfast in bed
2. Chocolate (obviously)
3. Anything handmade
4. Peace and quiet
5. Some ‘me time’
6. Snuggles on the sofa
7. Handpicked flowers – from the garden
8. A stress-free day

See? We don’t ask for much really do we? There’s not one thing on the list that couldn’t be arranged or bought for 72p is there?

Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful mum’s out there. Hope you have exactly the kind of day you’d like.
