Leadership Tips

I keep seeing articles advising people of 5/15/25 steps they can take to become better leaders.

I have got news for you.

If by the age of 25 (at the latest) you have not shown leadership qualities, you are not going to discover them by following lists of "tips".

I won't go so far as to say that leaders are born not bred, but I do firmly believe that inherent personality traits coupled to specific early life experiences mould leaders.

As for the qualities a leader needs, the three Ps will do for me:

PASSION
PRIDE
PERSEVERANCE

Why?

Passion: because without it you can't inspire yourself, let alone others.
Pride: because all human beings want to be proud of themselves and helping others to achieve that is a vital part of leadership.
Perseverance: because 95% (minimum) of success is achieved through sweat, not slick.

If you can't muster the 3 Ps without coaching, man-up: leadership is beyond you.
I know, by the way, that readers will come up with a host of alternative suggestions: honesty, integrity, intellect, humanity, egotism .... they will all get a mention.

I say no to every alternative, with a happy smile.
And, by the way, that's another thing you don't need to be a leader: a sense of humour.
I can honestly say that I have never worked for anyone who could make me laugh. Then again, perhaps that was because I was working for them ....

Now I think of it, if you are reading this and believe I was working for you, you are probably wrong. Most of my bosses were that only in name: I just got on and did my thing.

Led.

Anyway, don't worry if you haven't got the 3Ps. Forgo being a cry baby or, worse still, a cynic. Find yourself a leader and follow that person.

There is no shame in being just behind a leader on a path towards success.
Just make sure you know the meaning of success for you before starting out on the path.
